Plan on spending several hours in the area. Belem is easily reached by Tram 15 from Praça da Figueira or suburban train from Cais do Sodré railway station. The area sits beside the Tejo River, and fantastic views abound. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is in Belém, which has many other attractions worth visiting, such as Torre de Belém, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Museu Nacional dos Coches, Museu Coleção Berardo, Pasteis de Belém and more. Don't miss visiting the Church of Santa Maria de Belém Vasco de Gama's tomb is here. The "cloisters" was smaller than I imagined, but its stonework was beautifully ornate and the maritime motifs were fascinating. It celebrates the age when Portugal was a ruler of the seas. The style is named for King Manuel I and distinctively references maritime motifs and the discoveries of Vasco da Gama (the first European to reach India by sea) and Pedro Álvares Cabral (the first European to sail to what we now know as Brazil). This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is a primary example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture. If you are visiting Lisbon, this is one of the historic sites you must see.
